Last September 29, 2018, the UST Sociological Society hosted their General Assembly. This event hosted the SCL students and their creative 80’s look and the program consisted of two talks care of Ms. Irene Agnes Aguilar who focused on Sociology as a way to success and Atty. Jae Marie Gumatay telling how Sociology is a dimension of social change.
The speakers that were invited by the USTSS talked about their personal experiences of success and social change as a Sociology major and based on the application of Sociology in their respective profession. Starting off with Ms. Irene who is the HR in World Vision International who emphasized on success in the context of her relation with her co-workers. As an HR, she fulfills three different roles at the same time and they are the following:
● Give advice, guidance, technical and administrative expertise to all people and culture business. This role ensure consistency when it comes to applying HR policies.
● In-charge of coaching and developing in the selection of self. This role ensure that support is properly provided to employees and managers that are addressing unsatisfactory performance through a creation of improvement plans and constant monitoring.
● Give direction and assistance to sensation and confidential staff employment matter. This role ensures that any issue that arises in the company is addressed immediately and solved properly.
Based on all of her commitments in the company, Sociology helped her attain success through interaction for her to build a good relationship with her co-workers. The relationship allowed her to improve the skills of the employees, develop confidence amongst themselves, and fix necessary problems that might occur within the system. The result of the following improvements, development and fixation gave way for a harmony to the progress of their workplace because all the hard work benefits the company which can make them economically competitive. We can see how Sociology can be a focused base discussion as it aims to deepen a relationship through interaction.
On the other hand, Atty. Jae Marie Gumatay who talked about law as a profession and focused on dimension of social change. As a lawyer, Atty. Gumatay aims to practice the following:
● Serve as an efficient and competent legal practitioner
● Advising legal remedies, investigating facts of cases and handling arbitration
● Dispute settlement in securing the interest of justice, fairness, and truth
Based on her commitments, we can see how her roles are focused more on what is happening in our society instead of what is happening inside a workplace. In being able to immerse with different types of people and injustices in person or through paper, she becomes aware of different factors that are lacking in each person or events through the laws that our country has. Atty. Gumatay was able to give an idea that one must be separate himself or herself from the crisis that he or she is facing as a sign of professionalism and objectivity even if it gives out strong emotions. With this, we can see how Sociology can be present even in the presence social changes like emotions, stories, victims or events, and laws because all are rooted in interaction that can help one analyze why certain crimes are made, what decisions should be imposed, what laws to follow and to remind oneself to be transparent.
So with that, do you have what it takes to be a Sociologist?
